Papers of Obadiah Ethelbert Baker, 1859-1923.

Letters, manuscripts, (including approximately 200 of Baker's poems and 14 volumes of Civil War journals), documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings. During the war, Baker and his wife exchanged journals containing daily letters to each other. In 1870-1880's, while working on a book of memoirs, Obadiah E. Baker made fair copies of some of these letter books. The collection contains 13 volumes of original pocket diaries and fair copies of Baker's journals and one journal of Melissa Dalton Baker covering Aug. 1862. The Civil War letters and journals deal with military operations of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment on the Western front; camp life of a Civil War soldier: payments, foraging; drills and inspections, picket duty; roads, recreations, hospitals, medical care; doctors and nurses, especially "Catholic Sisters of Charity," Confederate prisoners. The Civil War experience and memory are reflected in poetry and reminiscences created in 1860' s-1900.

Approx. 350 pieces.
